Coming of a sub-par start in his previous outing against ADO, Konica Minolta Pioniers starter Jurjen van Zijl needed only 109 pitches (67 strikes) for a 2 hit complete game shutout. Pitching to the conditions really well, Van Zijl retired the first ten batters before allowing a hit to Dirk van ‘t Klooster in the 4th. Mixing up his pitches and varying speeds throughout his start van Zijl induced 10 ground outs while only giving up 2 singles and 2 walks. Corendon Kinheim’s Björn Henrichs had the other hit in the 8th. Well supported by an errorless effort in the field, van Zijl kept the bullpen out of the game, which is exactly what Konica Minolta Pioniers’ manager Bernie Beckman would have hoped for at the start of a 5 games/8 days stretch.
Corendon Kinheim’s starter Nick Veltkamp was impressive too, keeping the game scoreless striking out 6 while allowing 3 hits and 3 walks in his 5.2 innings but stranding all base runners until Onno Baur took over in the 6th after walking Norbert Lokhorst. All of the runs scored in the 7th inning with Baur pitching, after singles by Kevin Dirksen and Jefferson Muzo, a Mark Duursma clutch base hit in right field scored Mervin Gario (pinch ran for Dirksen) while an errant throw on the play to home plate by van ‘t Klooster allowed Muzo to score the game’s final run: 2-0.
